Ground Hog day!
Despite whether the Ground Hog (or modern man) sees a shadow today, the Ancients knew and celebrated the turning of the wheel, the seasonal change on this day, starting at sunset February 1st and ending at sunset February 2nd they celebrated the shorter days, the end of winter.
To help with this celebration of spring they would employ the help of Brigid, the Celtic Goddess of fire, fertility, midwifery and the young. I can’t imagine a better lineup for a Spring Goddess. Using her passion (fire) to grow (fertilize) and birth (midwife) a project! (Progeny). Wow!
How did they know this! How did we lose this?
Makes me think that the movie “Ground Hog Day” does have spiritual significance..
By sharing the Ancient Wisdom of this special day, perhaps the parallels and paradoxes of moving away from ancient practices will be revealed. By tuning into the moon and the seasonal cycles we will
natural-aly begin to align with nature. For nature is where the answers lay dormant as winter, waiting to share the subtleties we grossly overlook.
It is interesting to note that a “Ground” hog is the mascot for this day, and that Candlemas is a celebration in Christianity. These are all variations of a theme if you look close. There is an intersection with the modern world and perhaps some family traditions and ritual are remembered and practiced within your own home.
The Ancients used the elements for ceremony; water, fire and talismans or charms. These are still relevant and very powerful tools for purification, blessing and consecration.
Spring Cleaning was one such ritual that “sprung” from this celebration. It was a time to clean house with soap & “water”, it was warm enough to stop the eternal “fire” in the hearth to clean it thoroughly and set new logs on fire with a large candle lit from the community bon fire. This large candle became a tradition to burn throughout the year as a blessing “talisman or charm” and in remembrance of Brigid’s sacred eternal flame.
So how can we celebrate in our own small way on February 2?
Have an Epsom salt bath
Light a large candle
Welcome Brigid into your home if you are looking for the passion to grow and birth a project!
AND if you have time this weekend, The Feng Shui Lady says:
Practice the sacred act of sweeping with a (besom) or broom!
Give your house a spring smudge
Open your windows to let out the stale energies of winter
Light Sweet Grass to invite in the tender new love of spring
Out with the old – in with the new!
