Organic crops account for less than 1 percent of U.S. farmland, the association said, and federal Agriculture Department data shows there are only about 14,000 organic farms — a fraction of the 2 million total farms in the U.S. But the demand is high for organic products: Sales have increased from $3.6 billion in 1997 to nearly $40 billion in 2014, The Organic Trade Association figures show.

Two Midwestern states in the U.S. are offering farmers three years of support to move to organic crop production. Farmers would ditch GMOs along with their toxic pesticides and herbicides. The aim is to boost acreage of organically-grown crops in the U.S. once the upper Midwest is well on its way to sustainable farming.

North Dakota and Minnesota have both started grant programs. Minnesota led the way in 2013 and North Dakota began its program this year. The grants, ranging from $750 to $1000, help farmers to transition to organic crops. The money can be used for everything from soil testing to education on how to grow food in a sustainable way.

The new programs disallow using chemicals. Farmers who are switching from mainstream to organic farming practices will learn how to grow crops without using chemicals.

Lowell Kaul, an organic farmer near Harvey, North Dakota, who serves on a board that advises the state agriculture commissioner, explains:

“. . . there’s a learning curve there that the farmer needs to go through.”

Kaul also noted that a government-approved agency must certify the crops as organic before the farmers can sell them in the organic market.

The Organic Trade Association (OTA) is lobbying for a government-administered transition program that will give farmers better financial and educational support as well as certifying them. Nathaniel Lewis, the OTA’s senior crops and livestock specialist, says there’s even talk of offering new organic farmers premium prices for their produce.

Hopefully the grant programs will spread to other states. The citizenry of the U.S. could certainly use more organic farms. Almost half of Americans polled have said they want to eat organic food, and sales of organic food are booming. Recent sales have reached $35 billion annually.

There is certainly a healthy market waiting for any farmer who wants to heal his or her soil and start farming sustainably and organically.

How to preserve foods using sun-drying techniques ~ Natural News

(NaturalNews) Sun-drying is not only the oldest and simplest method of preserving food, it’s also the cheapest and most environmentally-friendly choice. Humans have been using solar power to dry fruit, vegetables and meat for thousand of years, and the technique works just as well today, especially if you live in a climate with high temperatures and low humidity, such as the southwestern and midwestern United States.

These days, many people use dehydrators or oven-drying methods of preserving food, but sun-drying can preserve more of the natural flavors, making the extra time and care worth the effort. Moreover, learning how to sun-dry foods is a very useful survival skill to have if the power grid goes down.

Almost any type of food can be sun-dried, but it’s best to start learning the techniques by first choosing foods that are relatively easy to dry, such as tomatoes.

Making your own sun-dried tomatoes
There’s nothing more flavorful than sun-dried tomatoes, and making your own couldn’t be simpler. Plum or paste tomatoes, such as Roma or Pomodoro, are generally considered the best choices for sun-drying, but any variety will work. The main thing to consider is thickness – slice paste tomatoes in halves or thirds, while plum tomatoes can be cut in half. Make your slices consistent in thickness so they will dry at the same rate.

Wash and cut the tomatoes to the desired thickness, then arrange them leaving space in between them on a frame that has stainless steel screens on the bottom and top. You can make the frame any size you want; the screen’s purpose is to provide airflow and to keep insects from getting in. You can season them with herbs or sea salt if you like.

Make sure you’re in for some hot, dry weather because it will take several days for the tomatoes to dry thoroughly. Place your racks in direct sunlight in a location that gets as much breeze as possible.

The tomatoes are ready when they no longer feel “tacky” to the touch.

Sun-dried tomatoes can stored in sterile canning jars with olive oil or in vacuum-sealed plastic bags.

Sun-drying fruit
Because they are high in sugar and acid, fruits are easy to sun-dry; the sugars and acid help to retard spoilage while drying. You’ll need to do a little preparation with most fruits before drying them.

Apricots and peaches should be cut in half and pitted before drying. Fruits such as apples, apricots and pears should be soaked in lemon juice or an ascorbic acid solution for around five minutes before being placed on the rack to begin drying. This will keep them from browning.

Cut the fruit into slices of uniform thickness and choose a hot, dry spell (85 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) for the drying period.

Bring the racks inside at night or cover them with cloth to prevent moisture from being reabsorbed.

Once the fruits are thoroughly dried, you should condition and pasteurize them for safe long-term storage.

To condition the dried fruits after they have cooled, place them in sealed glass jars for one week to ten days, shaking the jars daily to distribute the remaining moisture.

Once the fruits are conditioned, remove them from the jars and either pasteurize them in the oven on trays in single layers at 160 degrees Fahrenheit for half an hour or in plastic freezer bags in a zero-degree Fahrenheit freezer for 48 hours.

Sun-drying vegetables calls for basically the same method as fruits, but they should be cut in smaller pieces due to their lower acid content.

Why not give sun-drying a try this summer, especially if you have a surplus of garden fruits and vegetables?

Perhaps you remember a time not too far in our collective grocery-shopping past when regular grocery stores chains and places like Walmart had no idea what organic food was. Organic milk? Bread? Produce? They didn’t carry it. You had to find an obscure health food store or a farmer’s market if you didn’t live near a Whole Foods to find non-GMO, healthful food that wasn’t full of pesticides. But thankfully, consumers are demanding different products now. Demand for organic food has busted through its glass ceiling.

You can attribute this change in market demand to education. You can attribute it to the mass awakening happening around the planet. But either way, you can’t argue with the numbers. Eating organic is no longer ‘fringe’ or something done solely by health-nuts and athletes, hippies, and paranoids. In fact, consumer demand for organic food is seeing double digit growth year over year, and it doesn’t show signs of stopping.

Over 20,000 stores now offer organic food products. A report has shown that in 2012, more than $28.4 million was spent on healthful organic food, and that number has grown since the report published such findings. According to Nutrition Business Journal, organic food sales will reach a startling $35 billion this year. For those of us who don’t take our health for granted, this is just the beginning of a food revolution.

We’re eating better in every category of food, too, not just organic apple and oranges. People are boycotting toxic food-producing companies faster than you can say ‘lawsuit’ as they realize we’ve been lied to. People now know that something made in vats with chemical additives or spliced and diced with GMOs is anything but ‘natural.’

We are turning away from companies like Kellogg’s and Pepsi-Co, Coca-Cola, and Kraft to companies that we can actually trust – companies that don’t sell us non-food and call it food.

Or how about putting harmful additives used to make yoga mats in bread, as Subway once did before individuals pressured them to remove azodicarbonamide from their food? We just won’t sit silent anymore. Even beer companies are feeling the pressure to not only disclose toxic ingredients, but to change their ways, and stop using them.

While fresh fruits and vegetables leading the way in organics for the past three decades, and accounting for 43% of U.S. organic food sales in 2012, dairy, bread, packaged foods, snack foods, meat, poultry, seafood, and even condiments are seeing an up-turn in organic sales.

For now, individuals are purchasing their organic foods primarily through conventional and natural food supermarkets and chains, according to the Organic Trade Association (OTA), but this is also changing as more people turn to food co-ops and even neighbors for fresh, organic food.

We’ve come a long way since the organic food movement’s beginnings. Yes, our grandparents and great-grandparents just grew… food. They didn’t even call it organic, though they often didn’t use pesticides or herbicides, and certainly not petroleum-based or chemical fertilizers.

The modern organic movement began at the same time as industrialized agriculture. It began in Europe around the 1920s, when a group of farmers and consumers sought alternatives to the industrialization of agriculture. In Britain, the organic movement had gathered pace in the 1940’s. Today, people around the world, from the US to Bhutan, are asking for, and even growing organic food.

Indeed, growing our own food is becoming an absolutely essential part of our collective future.

In the same way that petrochemical companies don’t want to see the impending evolution of solar and wind power, Big Ag doesn’t want to accept what is happening with our food consciousness. We know better now, and so we ask for better. Our wallets are truly determining the future food landscape.

Graham: Not everyone has ready access to the food sources the author references and diets are varied, but the benefits listed here for being in a high vibrational state are many, including staying disease free.

As one goes through life, eating out of necessity becomes a routine. This routine – depending on where you live – is called; breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If the habit of eating includes foods that are not good for you, then one lowers their vibration thus making themselves vulnerable to sickness and disease. This is the danger of unconscious eating.

Everything in the universe has a vibration; this includes rocks, trees, plants, minerals, animals, people and so on. These are all measurable in hertz. Hertz, is named after the scientist Heinrich Rudolf Hertz; he was the first physicist to produce radio waves artificially.

He proved the existence of electromagnetic waves; and determined that one hertz is equal to one cycle per second. Remember, everything in the universe is energy; there are no exceptions, for example; a rock may have a low dense vibration, but an apple has a much higher vibration.

Eating nutritiously is important, but what seems to be ignored – by the consumer, the distributor, the medical community, the educational institutions, the government and the seller – is the value of foods high in vibration.

When eating fresh fruits and vegetables off the plant, tree or vine, the vibrational benefit of the food is maximized. Food shipped long distances lose their vibrational value, as they are picked long before they ripen before they arrive in your kitchen; meaning they did not get the sun required to maximize the vibrational quality of it.

It’s important to eat organic and local food as much as possible, because the energy in the food is of a high vibration and thus will help keep the body light rather than dense. Furthermore it will reduce the carbon footprint since local food does not require long distance shipping.

A dense body is undesirably and unconsciously achieved in most modern high stress, rat race, and cosmopolitan cities. Here the food choices available are not very high in water or vibration, are filled with sodium content, often bottled, canned or frozen, and are thus simply not good for you. The food choices offered on the majority of city corners are almost exclusively of a low density vibration.

When one eats organic food directly from the plant, the plant is rich in nutrients from the sun. The sun is the key to everything, as it charges these foods to reach their maximum health benefit. These foods are at their optimum when picked ripe right off their tree or plant.

Most fast food restaurants, large grocery food chains, even middle of the line eateries offer food that is of a very low vibrational quality, thus adding to the density of the body. Adding to the density lowers the hertz in the body and thus can result in sickness, obesity, stress, health issues and eventually death.

A healthy human body operates at 62 to 72 hertz. By raising the vibration of the body disease, virus, fungi and bacteria cannot live; the emotions become pleasant and positive and negative thoughts and emotions do not appear in the thought pattern. Modern society is laced with low density
temptations for the palette.

Foods to avoid which have little to no vibrational value; any processed foods, white flour, processed sugar, canned foods, pop, frozen foods and especially fast foods because they contain most if not all of the above items.

Other items to avoid with either no or little vibrational value; cigarettes, hard liquor, pasteurized cow milk, infant formulas, pharmaceutical drugs, radiation of any kind (x-ray for example), pasteurized yogurt and cheese, and most meats, such as; beef, chicken, lamb and pork, microwaved food, genetically modified food, any artificial sweeteners, margarine and lards, and any foods containing additives.

Foods high in vibration are; fresh organic fruits and vegetables, pure clean water, sea vegetation and raw honey. Other foods that have good vibrational value; maple syrup, cooked vegetables (blanch them to retain optimum vibration), raw nuts and seeds, raw organic dairy products (not pasteurized), free range eggs, wild fish, raw oils, such as; cold pressed extra virgin olive oil among others.

People have been told for decades, if not centuries, that they require three meals a day, when in fact it does not hurt to skip meals at all; because generally speaking the less food one eats in a lifetime, the longer one lives.

When one does eat, do so consciously and in moderation with foods that keep the body more alkaline, as the more acid in the body, the more problems can occur; resulting in a dense vibration and the possibility of problems more likely.

One other item of note and importance, give thanks and bless your food before eating and even while preparing and cooking it; therefore it’s a good idea to make your kitchen space a special, almost sacred place; because when one practices this, it will lift the vibration of the food.

When eating; it’s also important to create an ambiance of peacefulness. Light some beeswax candles, put on quiet music, do not argue at the dinner table, eat food slowly and chew well, and give thanks for the bounty; this will enable proper digestion of the food.

To find high vibrational foods, steer clear of the large supermarkets, or department stores offering supermarkets in them, as their aisles are primarily loaded with items for fast convenience and low vibrations.

However, some supermarkets may be making adjustments, just be vigilant to seek them out, because the vast majority only have an interest in the status quo. As an alternative, locate fresh produce stores and buy local and organic when possible.

Although harder to find and locate – depending on the city one lives in – health stores also have many products, which are mainly organic. It’s also very important to grow your own produce during the growing season, to optimize the nutritional and spiritual value of the food.

The results will most likely aid one in turning their life around. Practice the art of patience and intent regarding this new approach to food; and it will result in tremendous spiritual, mental and physical gains to lead a better, more divinely driven existence.

The choice is clear, stay away from; fast foods, heavy meats, processed food, large amounts of sodium and sugar in the diet; and head towards a leaner, higher vibrational diet . The results will be a lighter, less dense body; higher consciousness levels, a direct feed of intuition from one’s higher self, and living your life’s purpose.
