The Color Purple

Purple has always been one of my favorite colors. I’ve always enjoyed wearing purple sweaters, scarves and other items. Even our wedding colors were purple and white; I especially loved my bouquet of white roses and snowball chrysanthemums, with highlights of dark purple status. Purple has always made me feel joyful and serene.
One of my earliest understandings of purple is that it is associated with royalty – rich velvet capes and large gems. While I have very humble origins, I admit that purple always gave me feelings of abundance and strength. I felt “rich” when I surrounded myself with the color purple.
How different colors affect our energy systems has been one of the most interesting areas of study for me since learning Reiki and researching the chakra system. Color therapy is the application of this knowledge. We can enhance individual chakra functions by adding specific colors to our daily lives. Feeling insecure? Wear red or brown clothing; eat bright red apples; add red candles or table placemats to your dining room table. Want to bring a love relationship into your life? Attract the right person by wearing the colors green or pink. The list goes on. Each color has associated energies and functions; the more you learn, the more you can manifest your desired goals.
Purple Color
The color purple is a combination of red and blue. Red (associated with the Root chakra) can represent down-to-earth, secure practicalities, while darker shades of blue (the third eye chakra) are associated with intuitive abilities. The color purple is associated with the Crown chakra, and this chakra balances our thinking minds and our spiritual self. Our minds function to combine our intellectual abilities with our psychic abilities – the mind/spirit correlation. Practicing Reiki also enhances the mind/spirit merger. We bring our thinking intellect into sessions – create a peaceful atmosphere, place our hands on various body parts, listen to our client’s breathing patterns, etc. More importantly, we bring a spiritual aspect: permitting the Divine Flow to affect our clients’ energy system and recognizing the Energy is doing the work, not us.
The color white is also associated with the Crown chakra. Frequently, people see flashes of purple or white in their third eye vision while meditating or praying. It is not uncommon for Reiki practitioners to see rays of light coming down upon their client. White is symbolic of purity and unconditional love. When we become aware the Divine Spirit is always within us, we know unconditional love in a new and more powerful way. We know we are always loved.
Learning more about the color purple has been an affirmation for me. I have always been connected to the Divine Spirit, although there were times when I lived in a state of non-awareness. Now, when I do not “feel” the connection, it is so much easier to change course and become reconnected. It can be as simple as starting the Reiki flow and “seeing” the color purple, or the bright rays of white light, in my mind’s eye. Having a deeper understanding of working with colors is truly one of the best blessings of Reiki!
