The Playing For Change crew first met this unbelievably talented musician by a happy coincidence eight years ago. Mark Johnson, Jonathan Walls and Whitney Kroenke were heading to New Orleans in search of musicians and inspiration, and long-time friend of the project Keb’ Mo’ offered to put them in touch with someone.

When Mark dialed the number Keb’ Mo’ had given him, an Italian man answered. He told Mark that the person he was calling for was on the road with a band, but that he himself was a street musician in New Orleans and would love to be involved in our project.

In the eight years following that initial conversation, Roberto Luti has become one of the musical pillars on which Playing For Change has been built. We hope you enjoy his hauntingly beautiful slide guitar on this soulful piece. BARCELONA — With two small children and no income for the past two years, Antonio Delgado, 44, says things were so bad he had considered taking his life.

Then a few months ago, Delgado found out about a group that rents small parcels of farmland cheap near his town of La Rinconada in southern Spain. Now he’ s bringing home boxes of tomatoes, onions, peppers, lettuce, zucchinis and pumpkins. But he is not selling them.

Delgado and others are bartering, or trading, their way through a recession that has lasted years and left more than a quarter of the workforce unemployed. Tens of thousands of households have no wage earners, but they have skills and time on their hands to do work that can be traded for things they need but have no money to buy.

“I had no clue about agriculture,” Delgado said. “But this has changed my life.”

Banker Julio Gisbert, author of the book and blog Living Without a Job, says Spaniards are doing what makes sense in these tough times.

“It is possible to live without a job, and that doesn’t mean living without working,” Gisbert says.

Trading produce for other services and merchandise is one of the many unconventional ways the Spanish are making ends meet in what has been described as the new “sharing economy” that has developed here since the economic crisis hit more than four years ago.

According to the Spanish government, more than half a million families have no income. The unemployment rate has climbed to 26%, but among young workers it is as astonishing 55%.

The deepest economic crisis in Spain’s modern history is rooted in a housing boom financed by cheap loans to builders and home buyers who went bust. Homes were not worth what was borrowed to buy or build them.

Spain borrowed to lend the banks money to survive, but that put the national government in a budget deficit. Regional governments that spent budget surpluses in boom years were forced to end public spending and cut benefits and jobs, hobbling economic growth. The economy, which grew 3.7% a year on average from 1999 to 2007, has since contracted at an annual rate of 1% since.

With few jobs and no disposable income, bartering and other ways of exchanging goods and services are increasingly seen as good alternatives.

Some Spaniards are using so-called time banks to “deposit” time, knowledge and skills and trade them for things they need. All services have the same value, whether it is one hour of teaching a foreign language or one hour of cleaning house.

Teresa Sanchez, 55, is part of the Time Bank in Valladolid in western Spain. She has deposited offers of Japanese language classes, massage and company for the elderly. In return, she has received English lessons, appliance repairs and haircuts for her son.

“I first joined because I like the idea of people helping each other as it used to be long ago, but it is true that it is nice economic help,” said Sanchez. “The world would work better without money.”

The number of time banks in Spain has doubled to 318 in the past three years, according to the Association of Time Banks. SocialCar.com allows people to rent their private cars to other individuals while JoinUp Taxi makes it easy for people to share taxis to the same destination. Nolotiro.org (“I Won’t Throw It Out”) allows people to give away things they don’t need anymore, such as clothing or tools.

Mi Huerto Compartido (My Shared Garden) allows land owners to “lend” ground in exchange for part of the harvest. And Truequebook.es users barter school books and other goods for children.

Delgado got his plot of farmland from My Harvest Ecological Gardens, which rents 540-square-foot parcels of land for $40 a month. He works the land 20 hours a week and exchanges produce with other small farmers so he can get the wide variety of food his family needs.

Besides the cybermarket places, nearly 100 bartering markets have appeared in Catalonia alone, according to Intercanvis.net, a site that tracks the bartering economy in this northeastern region of Spain.

“The main reason why people start using these sites is economic, whether it is to save money, make money or get goods or services without money,” said Albert Canigueral, editor of ConsumoColaborativo.com, Spain’s biggest site on the sharing economy. “However, once people have tried them out a couple of times, their mentality changes and they start looking at alternatives to traditional shopping as their only option.”

Unlike other European countries, where thrift shops thrive, or in the United States, where garage sales are common, Spaniards have always been reluctant to buy used goods. In fact, just a few years ago, it would have been unimaginable to hear Spaniards boast over their newest second-hand acquisition.

“In Spain, those who buy things that have been used carry the stigma of not being able to buy brand new stuff,” explained Joana Conill, a researcher of alternative economic cultures at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya.

The crisis and social media are changing people’s habits and perceptions so “the attachment of people to objects is diminishing,” said Jordi Griera, president of the Institute for Management and Human Values in Barcelona. He and others says that the economic crisis has also brought Spanish society closer together in a positive way.

“The sharing economy is the gate to a cultural change in which people rediscover the power of getting connected with other fellow citizens not only to consume, but also to produce for each other, educate each other, finance each other,” said Canigueral.

BarcelonActua is a case in point. More than 7,000 people participate in this local “favor bank” where people help others without necessarily expecting anything in return. There is no control over who gets or gives what — everything is based on good faith.

Anna Daura, 49, of Barcelona, posted on the organization’s website requesting someone to help her clean out an apartment she owned that had been nearly destroyed by the previous tenant. She had lost her job a few weeks before and had little money to pay for the job. Minutes after posting her ad numerous people responded that they would help “for no money.”

A few days later, a dozen people went to her apartment with “incredible energy” and left it spotless, she said.

“Nothing like this had ever happened to me,” Daura said. Grateful for the help, she is now counseling other members of the network on how to start a business, her particular expertise.

Rocio Avila, 41, did. She lost her job two years ago and only has the $800 a month her ex-husband gives her to support their two children. When her boiler broke a few days ago, she posted that she needed help to repair it.

“Someone who didn’t even know me offered to give me the $260 I needed for a new one,” said Avila, in tears. “Of course this helped me financially but also emotionally — meeting these people is also a gift.”

We wish to speak to you this evening of the Raising of Your Frequency to match the higher vibrational frequency energies locking into your dear mother earth gaia’s crystalline grid within her etheric body and the higher dimensional energies now surrounding your planet, your higher selves, and all beings. These energies have been slowly and lovingly infiltrating your awareness, your planet, and your etheric bodies and all aspects of your Selves now for quite some time, slowly so that you would have time to adjust your selves to these beautiful higher dimensional energies which have been uplifting you into a most loving and beautiful consciousness and awareness of All That Is. The “lightworkers” among you are indeed quite sensitive to these energies which have been awakening within you the rememberance of your pre-birth contracts, agreements, and missions to assist the beloved mother earth and humanity during this great time of mass awakening on your planet. These energies, then, have been awakening within you the sequential codes to align yourselves with these higher vibrational energies so that you may be the wayshowers, the lightbearers, the lightholders, the telecommunicators from our realm to yours.

We in the higher realms love you most dearly and are welcoming you with great love and light into the higher dimensional frequencies, on your journey homeward toward the source of all Love and Light. You are on your pathway home, and the higher you “climb” in consciousness, the closer you become to source. All of your have been raising your vibrational frequencies, some intentionally, some not so intentionally, some through “osmosis” and contact with other lightworkers, and yes you see you are all becoming One and part of this new Unity Consciousness which you are becoming very aware of, so then the raising of your vibrational frequencies then becomes an “en masse” project or happening, towards the escalation of your conscious awareness of these higher energies and these higher dimensions. We have been speaking with many of you light beings on earth, you who are the bringers and you who are ushering in the new Age and the new Dawn upon your now ever-healing and ever-ascending mother earth Gaia who is a most loving and caring sentient being, and who exists in service to all of humanity of the outer earth and of the inner earth; she exists to lovingly provide your earthen home. Dear mother earth’s consciousness is also ascending into the higher dimensional frequencies, just as you All Are. Her consciousness rises along with yours, and yours along with hers. This loving intent towards your planetary home is part of the many aspects of the raising of your vibrational consciousness …..this raising of your vibrational frequency, then, is being obtained and realized in many ways….through your AWARENESS, your INTENT, your GROUP SOUL’S PURPOSE, your LOVING ENERGY, and most fo all, for each one of you, the CONNECTION TO YOUR HIGHER SELF and henceforth the connection with your higher dimensional Oversoul. This new Age upon earth is a time when all beings are “ascending” which is simply a raising of your vibrational frequencies, which also occurs when you are connected to your HIGHER SELF. The connection with the higher self is an integral part of your individual and collective ascension, and this, then, creates a most magnificent 5th dimensional “web” or “grid” of cosmic light that forms your Group OVERSOUL; YOU ARE ALL BECOMING CONNECTED TO FIRST YOUR INDIVIDUAL HIGHER SELVES, and then, like a brilliant domino effect, all of your individual higher selves then become connected together into this BEAUTIFUL GOLDEN LIGHT-FILLED NETWORK OF HIGHER DIMENSIONAL CONSCIOUSNESS. This Higher Dimensional Consciousness is what you will be connecting into for the formation of your Higher Councils of the New Earth. For the term “government” is an old-world concept that is falling by the wayside; your new world consists of these higher dimensionally-connected Higher Councils in a most lovingly organized way. Your Councils will know how to connect into this Higher Consciousness Grid or Network, and all words, thoughts, actions, and manifestations coming forth from these lovingly-guided councils will be of the utmost respect for all life and all beings, and will be of the Highest Good for All. The All includes all living beings upon and inside your planet, around your planet, and of those higher beings who are assisting your planet at this time including We your Angelic Councils of Light who most lovingly and dearly are assisting in guiding you and transforming your world into this most beautiful new Creation.

We leave you then with a simple visualization and meditation: that of the raising of your frequency to match the higher dimensional frequencies within your world now; the connecting of each of you with your Higher Self through intentional awareness and practice; and the natural progression then of each of your higher selves then connecting with each other in a beautiful golden-light filled network of Higher Dimensional Consciousness ~ this beautiful light-filled network is Full of the Source Energies of Love Light and Harmonious Creation. This light-filled network is also an echo or mirror of the light-filled higher dimensional frequency crystalline grid within your beautiful planetary being of mother earth/gaia….. so that her light-filled body then, is anchoring in these higher dimensional energies, and YOUR light-filled bodies are also anchoring in these higher dimensional frequencies by absorbing this beautiful higher dimensional light from mother earth below, and then bringing in the Creator Source energy into your bodies via your Individual Higher Selves, your Collective Higher Dimensional Oversoul, and the most Highest of All Energies Love and Creation, the Source of All.

We suggest most highly that all will meditate upon these beautiful light-filled concepts and visualizations which are in fact existing in the multidimensional NOW; your awareness, and consciously loving intentions are now connecting you into this beautiful higher dimensional frequency pattern; this, then, facilitates your “ascension” into these higher dimensional frequencies and light networks of higher selves and higher dimensional oversoul; this raising of your vibrational frequency to synchronize, harmonize and merge into these higher dimensional energetic frequencies.

A few months ago, I posted an article from Steve about Bhutan entitled, “Major Paradigm Shift?… Happened 40 Years Ago in Bhutan…’The Economics of Happiness’“. Now here is another “Great Nova Earth News” from Bhutan (link). Bhutan To Be First Country to Go 100% Organic

If there was ever a nation that could see the purpose behind organic, sustainable farming, it would be a nation that is composed mostly of farmers. Such a place does exist, and it soon may be the first nation to go 100% organic, paving the way for others to do the same on a global scale.

The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is known for a high level of citizen happiness, but it is doing something even more noteworthy in the near future. With Prime Minister Jigmi Thinley making a major announcement regarding the organic farming project at the Rio+20 Conference on Sustainable Development which took place last month, the move has made national headlines. It’s called the National Organic Policy, and it is fueled by the simple concept that working ‘in harmony with nature’ will yield the most powerful results — all without sacrificing human health or the environment.

What this comes down to is no GMO, no pesticides, no herbicides, no fluoride-based spray products, no Monsanto intrusion at all, and a whole lot of high quality food available for the 700,000 citizens of Bhutan. Food that, at one time, was simply called ‘food’. In the statement to other policy makers, Prime Minister Jigmi Thinley explained the move:

“By working in harmony with nature, they can help sustain the flow of nature’s bounties.”

Bhutan’s land currently supplys most corn, rice, fruits, and some vegetables, and it is perfectly positioned to begin developing 100% organic farming. In addition to containing a population that is mostly farmers, it also has extremely rich lands that are truly beyond what many consider organic.

Some lands in Bhutan have not even been touched with harsh chemicals of any kind, and traditional techniques are utilized to produce high yields without Monsanto dipping into the pockets of family farmers. This is in sharp contrast to India’s farming community, which has been shafted by Monsanto and subsequently nicknamed the ‘suicide belt‘ due to the rampant suicides that can be blamed in part by Monsanto-induced financial ruin.

Australian adviser to Bhutan, Andre Leu, explains:

“I don’t think it’s going to be that difficult given that the majority of the agricultural land is already organic by default.”

The shift is certainly inspiring, but it also reminds us about the true lunacy of designating foods as ‘organic’ and ‘traditional’ in modern society. These Bhutan farmers are not growing magic beans or enchanted corn, they are growing real food. Actual food as it was grown for thousands of years. It’s only now, with the advent of ways in which we can toxify our crops, do we value organic as if it were some privilege or act of class. When it comes down to it, we just want real food.
